𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 (𝗢𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰 𝗪𝗮𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴)

The High King of Ireland is not made only by blood or battle.

According to tradition, he is made by the quality of his judgement.
That tradition was known as 𝘧𝘪́𝘳 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯, or ‘noble judgement’.

This is the quiet but powerful message at the centre of the story of Cormac mac Airt — one of the most celebrated high kings in Irish mythology and a figure so closely associated with just rule that his reign came to be seen as a golden age for Brehon law itself.

The story goes that Cormac arrived at Tara as an unknown young man, at a time when the court was presided over by King Mac Con.

A woman came before the king in distress: her sheep had wandered onto the queen’s land and eaten her woad crop.

Mac Con delivered his judgement — the sheep were to be forfeit as compensation.

But the young stranger in the crowd spoke up and proposed a different outcome: since the sheep’s wool, like the woad, would grow back, shearing the sheep would be sufficient and proportionate restitution.

The judgement was elegant, balanced, and entirely in keeping with the Brehon principle that the penalty must match the loss — no more, no less.

The crowd’s reaction was immediate.

They declared that only a true king could judge so wisely, and Mac Con’s position became untenable from that moment.

Cormac’s legal instinct had revealed him.

This is a story about many things — legitimacy, wisdom, destiny — but at its core it is a story about the supreme importance of proportionality in law.

In the Brehon tradition, a king’s first duty was not to wage war or accumulate wealth, but to judge truly.

Cormac’s arrival proved, in a single ruling, that he was born to do exactly that.
