In the heart of County Carlow stands Borris House, ancestral seat of the MacMurrough Kavanagh family, direct descendants of the ancient Kings of Leinster.
For nearly a thousand years, their story has unfolded across this landscape: from medieval royalty and rebellion, to art, endurance, and quiet survival.
Designed in the early 1800s by Richard and William Vitruvius Morrison, Borris House remains one of Ireland’s finest examples of Tudor Gothic architecture. Within its walls lived Lady Harriet Kavanagh, artist, traveller, and founder of Borris Lace, whose creativity helped sustain the local community during Ireland’s darkest years.
Through centuries of conquest, loss, and renewal, the MacMurrough Kavanaghs have remained, an unbroken line from Ireland’s ancient kings to the present day.
Today, Borris House stands not only as a home, but as a living symbol of Irish resilience.
