A murder investigation has been launched following a fatal house fire in Edenderry, Co Offaly in which a 60-year-old woman and a four-year-old boy lost their lives.
The horror blaze, which Gardaí believe was deliberately started by unknown persons at this time, broke out at a home in Castleview Park on Saturday evening, 6 December.
Emergency services including Offaly Fire and Rescue Service, the National Ambulance Service and Gardaí responded to reports of the fire shortly before 7.45pm.
After the fire was brought under control, the bodies of the woman and child were discovered inside the property.
A second woman, aged in her 50s, was taken from the scene by ambulance and is being treated in hospital for serious injuries. Gardaí have declared the house a crime scene, and the Garda Technical Bureau is conducting a full technical examination.
