This time, for the first time, we traveled a little beyond the Setouchi area and visited Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture. Our destination was Kyojin Stewhouse, an Irish restaurant in Matsue, known as the City of Water.
The owner, Alan-san, is a “giant” who stands two meters tall. He used to run his restaurant in Togoshi Ginza, Tokyo, but after many twists and turns, he moved to Matsue, a city closely connected to Lafcadio Hearn.
From his signature stew to homemade sausages, meat dishes, and sweets, everything is made by hand with great care.
Originally from Ireland, Alan-san has a deep love for his home country. Every day, he works hard to share Irish culture with people in Japan.
In 2023, he took on a cooking marathon challenge and was recognized by Guinness World Records for both a cooking marathon and a baking marathon.
We followed him over two days, from preparation day to weekend restaurant service. A story of a giant connecting Ireland and Matsue.

今回は、はじめて瀬戸内海から少し離れて、島根県松江市へ取材に行ってきました。
訪れたのは、水の都・松江にあるアイルランド料理のお店「巨人のシチューハウス」。
オーナーのアランさんは、身長2mの「巨人」。以前は東京・戸越銀座でお店を営んでいましたが、さまざまな出来事を経て、小泉八雲ゆかりの松江へ移転しました。看板のシチューをはじめ、自家製ソーセージ、肉料理、スイーツまで。料理はどれも、手間を惜しまない手作りです。
アイルランド出身のアランさんは、母国への想いがとても強く、日本で多くの人にアイルランドを知ってもらうため、日々奮闘しています。2023年にはクッキングマラソンに挑戦し、「クッキングマラソン」と「ベーキングマラソン」でギネス世界記録にも認定されました。今回は、仕込みの日と週末営業の2日間に密着。アイルランドと松江をつなぐ、巨人の物語です。
