Blue Lough Hike – Mourne Mountains, County Down
If you’re looking for a rewarding and accessible walk in the Mournes, the Blue Lough is a brilliant choice. There are two excellent parking areas at the start of the route, charging £3 for day parking and £5 for overnight stays.
The Walk
The hike is around 7.5 km and typically takes about 3 hours at a steady pace. The trail is generally flat-ish, with just a couple of small river crossings that are easy to manage. Most of the route is straightforward, though there are a few rocky sections where sturdy footwear definitely helps.
The Scenery
Your path leads you between Slieve Binnian and Slieve Lamagan, opening up to some of the best landscape views the Mournes have to offer. Eventually, you arrive at the beautiful Blue Lough, famous for its clear water and striking colours. It’s a stunning spot, though it can get chilly, so it’s best not to sit around too long without an extra layer.
What to Bring
Rain gear – the Mournes can change weather fast
Walking boots with ankle support – especially for the rocky stretches
Warm layers – the lough area gets cold quickly
Snacks & water – for the 3-hour round trip
