NATO leaders converge in the Turkish capital for an annual alliance summit. The previous year’s summit in The Hague was largely devoted to agreeing on increasing defense spending relative to GDP across the alliance after more than a year of pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump. What can be expected to be the primary focus of the Ankara summit?
“The topic number one is to convince the United States that Europe is doing its homework, that Europe is investing, that Europe is no longer free-riding on the American support, and that Europeans are very seriously looking into taking their own defense into their own hands,” said Marcin Zaborowski, TVP World’s Europe Editor, adding that NATO’s Secretary General Mark Rutte has been particularly active in his efforts “showing charts to Donald Trump demonstrating how NATO member states have increased their defense spending.”
“Of course, there are still a number of capabilities that Europeans are not going to acquire very soon. And for example, nuclear capabilities. This is something which we Europeans don’t have,” adding that the European allies would like to convince the U.S. to boost the presence of its nuclear deterrence on the Old Continent as it reduces the deployments of its conventional forces.
