The economist who predicted the 2008 property crash has said that rising house prices show no sign of falling in the coming years. Dr Alan Ahearne became known as “the man who told you so”, after he laid out his predictions of doom on RTÉ’s Future Shock: Property Crash programme in April 2007 — before the boom went bust. It’s a Thursday afternoon in Athlone, and Dr Ahearne is sitting down with me for his first interview since leaving the Taoiseach’s office, where he worked as an economic adviser to Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin for nearly four-and-a-half years.
