However, these were typically ceremonial titles, acknowledging the most powerful king on the island. Brian Boru changed that. The twelfth son of a petty king, Brian Mac Cennetig suffered greatly at the hands of Vikings and Hibernian alike. It was this suffering that fueled an unprecedented rise to power.
