The Life of Brian Boru
Ireland had “High Kings”, known as Ard Ri to the Irish, from the 9th Century AD. However, these were typically ceremonial titles, acknowledging the most powerful king on the island. Brian Boru changed that. The twelfth son of a petty king, Brian Mac Cennetig suffered greatly at the hands of Vikings and Hibernian alike. It was this suffering that fueled an unprecedented rise to power. Brian Boru went on to bring all of Ireland under his command, cementing himself in history as the first true King of Ireland.
