A Polish far-right MEP triggered uproar in the European Parliament on Thursday after calling European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen “Reichsführerin” and accusing her of pushing “insane” decarbonisation policies that cause “devastation and poverty.” Grzegorz Braun said von der Leyen was “dangerous” and should be placed “in a madhouse,” prompting the session chair, Pina Picierno, to cut off his microphone for violating parliamentary language rules. Braun demanded to know which word was inappropriate, insisting he had not called her a Nazi and was referring only to her political authority. Picierno said Nazi-related terms were unacceptable in the chamber. Braun used the same reference to von der Leyen the previous day while attacking the Green Deal, the migration pact and EU support for Ukraine, calling them “insane projects.”
