Explainer: What is the Mercosur deal, and is there anything good for Ireland?

The Taoiseach and Tánaiste confirmed on Thursday that Ireland will vote against the controversial Mercosur trade deal.

While this vote will be symbolic, as the deal is now expected to go through the EU Council today, the Coalition has decided to stick with its commitment in the Programme for Government and oppose the agreement.

The deal has been 25 years in the making, and interest groups in Ireland, particularly in the farming sector, have been strongly opposed to it.
