The four legal jurisdictions of England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland are united in their opposition to the UK government’s plan to limit the right to a jury trial.
Next year, Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary David Lammy will seek to implement proposals aimed at addressing what he has termed a “courts emergency.” As part of his “swift courts” initiative, judges in England and Wales will preside over cases that carry a potential sentence of three years or less without a jury.
