Gardai continue to investigate all of the circumstances of the ‘family tragedy’ in Louth

The chief suspect for the murder of three family members in Co Louth told a local after the frenzied knife attack: “I’m sorry for all the screaming and shouting. It’s over now.”

The victims of the attack, which occurred in the Drumgowna area, near Tallanstown, have been named as parents Mark (54) and Louise (56) O’Connor, and their son Evan, aged 27. Post-mortems on all three victims will commence today, gardaí confirmed this morning.

A care worker who regularly called to the family home came upon the horrific scene yesterday morning and raised the alarm.

Mark O’Connor was found at the gate of the property in a pool of blood.

His son, Evan, was found lying on the ground at the side of the house and Ms O’Connor was found in an upstairs room.

The suspect (31), who was known to the victims, was detained by armed detectives later around 1km from the scene.

“He was just walking along the road, he wasn’t running or trying to evade gardaí,” one source said.

The suspect’s hands were covered in blood, but he had none on his clothing, leading gardaí to believe that he changed them following the killings.

It is understood that after he left the scene he approached a local person on the road and said: “I’m sorry for all the screaming and shouting. It’s over now.”

Gardaí are trying to establish a timeline of the incident.

They believe the murders may have happened in the early hours of yesterday morning, but are awaiting post-mortem results to confirm the time of death.

The suspect has a history of mental illness and has had previous interactions with gardaí.

At a press conference on Tuesday morning, Superintendent Andrew Warren of Drogheda Garda Station said officers responded to a call to attend a residential property shortly before 10am.

“Three people – two males and one female [all adults] – were found deceased at the scene,” they said.
