Gerry Adams has stepped back into the immigration debate — but Sinn Féin’s own history makes his latest intervention more than a little awkward.
In this video, I compare Adams’s comments in his recent PoliticsJOE interview with Sinn Féin’s 1998 Ard Fheis motions calling for an immediate amnesty for asylum seekers and the “optimum position of no restriction on immigration into Ireland.”
I also examine his attack on the so-called “unholy alliance” of nationalists and loyalists standing together over immigration, Sinn Féin’s new managed-migration language, and polling that suggests the party leadership may be drifting further away from sections of its own working-class base.
Has Sinn Féin genuinely changed its position — or has it simply discovered that open borders are becoming politically toxic?
This is political commentary, criticism and analysis.
