Gribben and ‘safeguarding failures’: Investigation into Presbyterian Church in Ireland launched

The Presbyterian Church in Ireland is on the rack.

The PSNI has now launched a criminal investigation in connection with alleged safeguarding failures.

Police insist they weren’t aware of ‘the potential scale’ until last week.

It comes after the church’s moderator Trevor Gribben quit citing ‘serious and significant failings’ in safeguarding from 2009 to 2022.

Those failings include concerns over a pedophile teacher who was a voluntary youth group leader in the church.

The church’s former head of safeguarding says the internal culture in Ireland’s largest Protestant denomination enabled serious errors in safeguarding, while former Alliance Party leader Lord John Alderdice has accused the church of an “attempted cover-up”.

Ciarán Dunbar is joined by The Belfast Telegraph’s Brett Campbell and the Sunday Life’s Angela Davison, who have both been working across the story.
