Heather Humphreys is edging towards a tilt at the Áras after behind-the-scenes discussions took place between the former Fine Gael minister and the party leadership last night.
Her potential candidacy has been gaining traction, with the unexpected support of a number of Independent members of the Government.
The former Cavan-Monaghan TD is understood to be keen to put her name forward, with a short nomination process expected to open early next week.
With former EU commissioner Mairead McGuinness pulling out as Fine Gael’s candidate and former tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald ruling herself out, saying her decision announced last April not to enter the race still stood, the field is narrowing.
