How a six-day standoff by protesters forced Irish government to act

For six days fuel protests brought Ireland to a standstill as farmers and lorry drivers blocked fuel depots, roads and the country’s only oil refinery, forcing the government to announce a $550M aid package.

Like many nations, Ireland’s fuel prices have risen due to the war in Iran with a 20% jump in petrol prices, sparking nationwide anger.

As fears fuel was going to run out, motorists panic bought leading to 600 petrol stations closing.

The Irish government, led by Micheal Martin, has been criticised for its slow responsem, damaging the Taoiseach’s reputation.

Will the Irish government’s deal be enough to calm tensions – and could these protests be the start of a movement set to spread across the UK and Europe?
