Some Irish politicians have been preparing ahead of a possible poll, sending letters to the European Parliament asking for Northern Irish MEPs to be given observer status.
Northern Ireland is part of the UK but even after Brexit, NI residents can hold Irish passports, keep EU citizenship, and benefit from access to the EU single market.
