Do governments actually want to solve the housing crisis… or are they waiting for something else to happen?
While cleaning out my garage and planning a few projects for the garden, I started thinking about something strange in housing policy. If solving problems is often about removing obstacles first, why do governments seem to make it harder to build homes?
In this video I explore a question that doesn’t get talked about enough:
what if some policymakers believe the housing crisis will eventually solve itself through demographic change?
Across the developed world birth rates are falling, populations are aging, and countries like Japan are already experiencing population decline. Some regions now have millions of empty homes.
Could depopulation eventually reduce housing demand?
Or is waiting for demographic change a dangerous strategy while housing shortages continue today?
This video explores the relationship between:
the 2008 housing crash
planning restrictions
housing supply shortages
declining birth rates
global depopulation trends
and asks a bigger question about the future of housing.
