Ireland is “looking at a ban” on social media for under-16s, according to Taoiseach Micheál Martin, following an announcement by the UK government to ban the biggest social media platforms and ‘AI companions’ to young teenagers.
“Social media is the public health issue of our time and governments have to act,” said the Taoiseach, speaking to the media in Dublin on Monday morning.
However, he said that Ireland’s policy is still to follow an agreed EU position rather than a solo ban.
