Ireland on the brink of fuel shortage as protests intensify | RTÉ News

Protests over the cost of fuel are continuing for a fourth day with blockades in place at locations around Ireland.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said that the blockades have caused a situation whereby Ireland is “on the precipice of turning oil away from the country” in the middle of a global oil supply crisis.

In Cork, protesters allowed two tankers in to be filled at the Whitegate oil refinery but a standoff with the Garda public order unit took place when a third fuel tanker arrived.

Government ministers met with representative bodies of farmers and hauliers to discuss further supports.

Four fuel protesters were denied entry to the meeting.

It’s estimated that by tonight around 500 service stations across the country will run out of fuel.
