Ireland’s Democracy Under Threat. Councillors silenced by Party Orders
Today, Ireland’s democracy has taken a serious hit. The Tánaiste, Simon Harris, alongside the Taoiseach, has ordered Fine Gael councillors nationwide not to support Independent candidates for the presidential election. This is not strategy, it’s control. Local councillors, elected by the people, are being stripped of their independence and reduced to rubber stamps for party headquarters. History shows us a better way. In past elections, from Mary Robinson in 1990 to Independent candidates in 2011 and 2018, local councils played a vital role in opening the door to fresh voices and genuine choice. That freedom is now being dismantled. In this video, Dr. Cora M Stack calls out this direct insult to local democracy and urges councillors to resist political control. Our democracy is only as strong as its foundations—and right now, those foundations are under attack.
