Ireland’s first pedestrian crossing light 1975

Ireland’s first pedestrian crossing light 1975

Pelican crossings, already in use in Northern Ireland since 1970, were introduced to Dublin as a safer and more controlled way for pedestrians to cross the road. The system allows pedestrians to activate the lights and includes flashing signals that guide both drivers and pedestrians. Unlike zebra crossings, this system gives pedestrians mechanical control and includes audio signals to assist the visually impaired. It was praised for improving safety and reducing accidents. (Broadcast on 3 December 1975.)
