Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin withdraws from Irish presidential election.
A major spanner has been thrown in the works for the Irish presidential election as Jim Gavin suddenly announced his withdrawal from the race.
A bombshell statement came from the Fianna Fail press office with former Dublin GAA boss Gavin admitting he had “made a mistake” and would thus be pulling out of the race.
The announcement came just hours after Gavin faced repeated questions at a televised debate and, subsequently, a media doorstep regarding reports he owed a former tenant more than €3,000.
With much of the political world waking up to the unexpected news, there has been plenty of reaction to the major shake-up as polling day draws closer.
