Just people in Belfast raving about Kneecap

After 800 years of occupation, you’d hope that Brits know a thing or two about the island of Ireland. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. To set things straight, we headed to Belfast to speak with people on the street about KNEECAP, particularly regarding the KNEECAP rapper Mo Chara appearing at Westminster Magistrates Court to face a terrorism charge. We discussed what people on the street think about the rap group, what they mean to both the loyalist and nationalist communities, and what Brits just don’t understand about Northern Ireland. We meet people emphatic about KNEECAP’s impact on the Irish language and making it cool to learn it. We also meet a guy who claims they should get out of Belfast and people cynical about the platform they’ve been given. It’s clear that the people we met are not convinced people in the rest of the UK know that much, or even care about, Northern Ireland. One woman makes the point that people in the rest of the UK see events like the rioting in Ballymena, Larne, and Portadown and don’t engage with anything other than surface level events. They don’t understand the context or history. KNEECAP are a rap group made up of Mo Chara, DJ Próvai, and Móglaí Bap. They face calls to be removed from the Glastonbury line up.
