Lughnasadh was one of the four great Gaelic seasonal festivals, traditionally celebrated in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man. Meaning “the assembly of Lugh,” it marked the beginning of the harvest season with athletic contests, feasting, storytelling, trade, matchmaking, and the proclamation of laws.
According to Irish mythology, Lugh established Lughnasadh to honor his foster mother, Tailtiu, who died from exhaustion after clearing the land for farming. The festival preserved her memory while celebrating skill, community, and the promise of a new harvest.
