There is obscene profiteering from the International Protection Accommodation Service (Ipas) for asylum-seekers, the Dáil has been told.
Two directors of a cafe-turned-accommodation centre paid themselves €4.6m last year, whereas it previously turned a profit of just €2,092, TDs heard.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said spending on accommodation had increased from €129m in 2019 to €1bn last year.
The number of centres had gone from 78 eight years ago to 324 now, with residents having increased from 7,000 then to 32,000 now.
