An Abandoned Irish-Speaking Island
Inishkea island was abandoned in the late 1920s and early 1930s after a tragic accident where a number of young fishermen were drowned at sea. Prior to this, Inishkea North and South islands were totally self-sufficient, even providing food back to the mainland during the time of the Great Famine.
