Thousands of drivers without insurance are being caught and having vehicles seized each month as gardaí tap into an insurance database from the roadside.
More than 16,000 uninsured vehicles were seized in the first 10 months of last year following the rollout of a new roadside insurance detection system.
Since gardaí gained instant access to insurance data during roadside checks, an average of 1,615 vehicles per month have been seized.
