According to the latest census, 130,000 people in Scotland have some knowledge of Irish but in Northern Ireland, almost 100,000 more people have some knowledge of the language – 228,617. There is far more Irish on the BBC in Scotland than there is in the North, however. There is a clear distinction, however, and few Irish speakers complain about the issue – why is that?
