It was a rainy afternoon in Dublin when our shift began with Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) at Phibsboro fire station to see a very special part of their work. DFB works closely with the childhood cancer charity Oscar’s Kids to make sure children have the opportunity to become honorary firefighters for the day.
Abigail (8) was invited in with her family and was surprised with a trip to Lapland, which was made possible by Oscar’s Kids and the fundraising efforts of senior executive fire prevention officer Keith Brunkard.
She rang the bells in the station, was driven around the block in a fire truck, used the hose along with some other equipment and even got her own badge.
Shortly after Abigail’s visit, we were called to a small fire in a south Dublin home, where a tumble dryer had caught fire. Thankfully, everyone was safe and the firefighters quickly got the flames under control when we arrived. We saw how the crew ventilated the house and minimal damage was caused as a result.
The team went through their usual routine, checking the property and topping up their breathing apparatus so everything would be ready for the next call.
Back on the other side of the city at Tallaght fire station, the shift team “A-Watch” was clocking in and the crew was gathered around a long table.
