Rat Infested Houses in Limerick 1971

A Limerick family of six endured severe hardship in a rat-infested home with no toilet or direct water supply, all sharing one small room. For over fifteen years, they lived in these substandard conditions, leaving their children socially isolated and ashamed to invite friends over. Despite being on the housing list for years, they faced broken political promises and no new council houses in their village for over two decades. The family insisted on staying in Doon, where their work and school life were rooted, but feared they might never secure a proper home. (Broadcast on 1 December 1971.)
