The Government’s deal to spend almost €150m to acquire the Citywest Hotel to house asylum-seekers on the outskirts of the village have split locals.

The hotel has been a temporary migrant centre since 2022, and before that was used by the State during the pandemic, so it has been argued that buying the hotel makes financial sense instead of leasing it.

Last year, the State paid more than €70.8m to the company which runs the 764-bed Citywest Hotel to accommodate asylum-seekers and Ukrainian refugees. The year before it spent €53.7m on leasing Citywest from Cape Wrath Hotel Unlimited.
