On the gigantic platform that staged Wednesday’s ludicrous Ryder Cup
opening ceremony, Shane Lowry looked as thrilled to be there as the front row on Winning Streak.
All around him sat besuited golfers determined to look both respectful and cool. The Americans came dressed as concierges from a four-star hotel.
Patrick Cantlay wore shades and squeezed out a smile with the same discomfort as a woman squeezing out a baby.
Bryson DeChambeau opted for a rousing fist pump when his name was called out. Alas, he fudged the motion and wound up looking like Grandpa Simpson admonishing a cloud.
Lowry, though. He seemed genuinely to enjoy the hoopla. This is a good sign for someone who, at various stages this year, has given off impatient kid-waiting-for-Christmas vibes about the Ryder Cup.
