Iraq is investigating a drone attack on a key Saudi oil pipeline – which they confirmed originated from its territory near the border with Iran – on Friday.
Satellite images show damage to the cross-country East-West pipeline. Before being shut down Friday, the facility played a crucial role in Saudi Arabia’s ability to export oil from the Red Sea since U.S. disruption of the Strait of Hormuz.
As a result, the airstrike is deepening an energy squeeze in the region, pushing crude oil prices above US$100 a barrel.
Amid the U.S.-Iran war, Iraq is under mounting pressure to prevent local militias from aiding other Iran proxy groups across the region.
The Saudi Foreign Ministry – which has vowed not to retaliate – said it would give the Iraqi government an opportunity to take the necessary measures.
