Spike Island: Ireland’s Most Dangerous Prison.
At its peak, this island prison held over two thousand five hundred inmates crammed into spaces designed for a few hundred. In a single year, two hundred and eighty six men died behind its walls. Children as young as twelve were chained in converted ammunition stores. Men were driven to madness in underground dungeons so dark they lost all sense of time. When archaeologists finally began digging, they exposed mass graves containing over thirteen hundred bodies, most buried without names or ceremony. This is Spike Island, the deadliest prison the British Empire ever built.
