Surge in young Irish children using AI chatbots as virtual friends and homework assistants

There has been a huge rise in the use of chatbots by children for homework, friendship and information, with no safeguards, according to a national survey by CyberSafeKids.

A total of 26pc of eight to 12-year-olds and 36pc of 12 to 15-year-olds reported using the technology this year, compared with 5pc of under-12s and 12pc of young teens last year.

The survey of 9,000 schoolchildren also showed age verification online remains ineffective, with more than 70pc of under-13s still using social media apps.
