The challenges facing Ireland as it takes over the EU Presidency

Ireland has taken over the presidency of the European Union council for the next six months at a challenging time for the bloc.

Defence and security remain a concern as the war in Ukraine continues while the US-Israeli war on Iran has sent global energy prices soaring.

Friction with the Trump administration, concerns over Chinese goods flooding Europe and Europe’s lack of competitiveness are all big topics to be tackled in Brussels.

EU enlargement is also back on the agenda while the EU budget for the next seven years also needs to be negotiated and signed off by the end of the year.

So, can Ireland step up and deliver?
