From Muff and Nobber to Skeheenaranky and Muckanaghederdauhaulia, Ireland is full of place names with fascinating stories hiding behind them.
Software engineer and Irish re-learner Dave McGinn joins Ireland AM to explain how learning Irish changed the way he saw the names on road signs — and inspired him to create the Baile Beo app.
Dave reveals the meanings behind some of Ireland’s most unusual place names, including “the little dancing bush”, “the hillside of daisies” and “pig-marsh between two sea inlets”, and explains how the Irish versions often preserve far more history and meaning than their anglicised forms.
He also shares how Baile Beo is helping people rediscover the stories, archaeology and identity of towns and villages across Ireland.
