Born during a new era of confidence and investment in Irish railways, the Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways Class 201 locomotives were the most powerful diesel engines ever to operate on the island of Ireland. Built in Canada between 1994 and 1995, these 3,200-horsepower machines were designed to modernise flagship passenger services, hauling prestigious expresses between Dublin, Cork and Belfast at speeds and standards never before seen on the network. Sleek, powerful, and technologically advanced, the Class 201 was intended to lead Irish rail travel into the twenty-first century.
In this documentary, we uncover the remarkable story of a locomotive class that embodied ambition, innovation and changing fortunes. From dramatic airborne delivery by Antonov aircraft, to years at the head of the Enterprise and InterCity services, to later freight work and an uncertain future, this is the history of one of Ireland’s most iconic modern locomotive classes.
