They’re Starving Outside the Dáil — and Ireland’s Barely Noticed
A viewer emailed the other day, to talk about a song he wrote. His name is Darren and he’s an Irish Folk Musician. He had written a song about these 4 hunger strikers, Maurice Patton O’Connell, Mary Donovan, Miriam Moriarty Owens, and Mary Dunlevy Greene. I listened to the song, read about the 4 hunger strikers, who have apparently been on Hunger Strike for 34 days as of the 24th of October. I was absolutely shocked that it took 34 days for me to even hear of this. I fear that nobody is really aware of this.
Industrial schools and reformatories in Ireland were state and church-run institutions that operated from the 1800s to the late 20th century. They were originally meant to care for poor or neglected children but became places of widespread abuse and forced labour. Many children were taken from their families and raised in harsh, often cruel conditions where physical and sexual abuse were common. Survivors of these institutions are still fighting today for justice, recognition, and the support they were promised.
With this channel about Irish Music, when I heard about Darren writing a song about this. I just could not sit back and do nothing. I hope this video reaches a wider audience so that people area aware of the situation and we can help them and the other 4,000 survivors of this awful time.
