Australia’s Defence Secretary faced tough questioning over changes to the country’s Virginia-class submarine acquisition under the AUKUS pact. The revised plan will see Australia acquire three in-service Virginia-class submarines instead of one new and two in-service boats. During Senate estimates, questions were raised over who proposed the changes and how the decision was reached. Defence officials said discussions with the United States had been underway for around 18 months. The deal remains a major part of Australia’s long-term nuclear-powered submarine strategy and its broader AUKUS defence partnership.
