Will leftist Catherine Connolly win the battle for Irish Presidency?

Ireland goes to the polls this week to vote for its next president with independent candidate Catherine Connolly leading her Fine Gael opponent, Heather Humphreys, in the polls.

Her campaign has been backed by left-wing Irish political parties including Sinn Fein and Labour.

Following in the footsteps of the much-loved President Michael D Higgins, who has come to the end of his 14 year tenure, will be no easy task.

He has been vocal on his support for Palestine and is popular with the Irish youth. But there are concerns voter turnout will be low.

The race started off household names touted to run for the presidency from Connor McGregor to Bob Geldof and Michael Flatley.

It was whittled down to three but after a financial controversy, the Fianna Fail candidate Jim Gavin to drop out.
