In a significant blow to the Irish government, voters have rejected proposals to amend constitutional references related to family makeup and a mother’s “duties in the home.” Prime Minister Leo Varadkar had framed the vote, held on Friday coinciding with International Women’s Day, as an opportunity to eliminate outdated and sexist language about women. The first proposal to broaden the definition of family, extending beyond marriage, was defeated by 67.7% to 32.3%.
