More than 1 in 8 Garda stations across the country recorded their highest crime levels in a decade

More than 1 in 8 Garda stations across the country recorded their highest crime levels in a decade last year, largely due to a surge in theft and criminal damage offences.

An analysis of official crime figures has revealed that 76 out of the nationwide network of 564 Garda stations experienced their worst rate of crime over the past 10 years in 2023.

Among the larger population centres where crime levels peaked last year were Waterford, Tralee, Wexford, Trim, Athlone, Gorey and Dungarvan.

Several other large towns with 10-year-high crime figures during 2023 were Leixlip, Roscrea, Cashel, Carrick-on-Suir and Newbridge.

Others included Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan; Killaloe, Co Clare; Swinford, Co Mayo; Clifden, Co Galway; Boyle, Co Roscommon; Mallow, Co Cork; Youghal, Co Cork and Listowel, Co Kerry.
