The Enoch Burke Saga Continues

Failed to Leave School Property

Enoch Burke is €700 down, after he failed to leave school property and purge his contempt of court order on Friday afternoon.

The former teacher has continuously shown up at Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath this week, despite being dismissed from his role there.

2pm came and went, but Mr Burke stayed on school property.

His failure to leave and purge his contempt before this time means Mr Burke will now be subjected to a €700 fine.

The decision was made yesterday by Mr Justice Brian O’Moore, who said it had to be done because it was clear he does not accept the validity of the order to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School.

For every day Mr Burke decides to ignore the court orders he will be subjected to the €700 fine, which could cost him €5,000 a week.

Earlier, his father drove him to Wilson’s Hospital School at around 8.45am.

This case will be reviewed at a hearing on February 10th.

Speaking to reporters before he left the school, Mr Burke said he believed he should not have to pay.

“In relation to the fine – and I want to stay on this point – because I would just say I don’t believe I should pay a fine to practice my religious beliefs,” he said.

“I don’t believe I should pay a fine.

“A fine is a punishment in which somebody is ordered to pay a sum of money for something they’ve done that’s illegal or a rule that they’ve broken,” he added.
