‘Russia behaving as a Rogue State’

Strongly criticise Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

The Taoiseach used his speech at the UN General Assembly to strongly criticise Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Now we see President Putin’s plan sham referenda in eastern Ukraine, aimed at forcibly changing Ukraine’s borders, in clear violation of the UN Charter,” he said.

“We have to name what we are seeing. These actions, taken collectively, show Russia behaving as a rogue state.”

Micheál Martin also used his speech to hit out at the failures of the UN Security Council in his last UN address as Taoiseach.

In his speech to the General Assembly in New York, Mr Martin said it “beggars belief” that the UN had failed to agree a resolution on climate change.

He slammed Russia for vetoing the resolution, put forward by Ireland and Niger, calling it a “singular failure of political will and political responsibility”.
